The Hiqhwayman by Year 6

The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding—
   Riding—riding—
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.

He'd a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin;
They fitted with never a wrinkle: his boots were up to the thigh.
And he rode with a jeweled twinkle,
   His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jeweled sky.

Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
He tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred;
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,
   Bess, the landlord's daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim the ostler listened; his face was white and peaked;
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like moldy hay,
But he loved the landlord's daughter,
   The landlord's red-lipped daughter,
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—

"One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize tonight,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
   Watch for me by moonlight,
I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way."

But Tim the ostler was listening to the highway man. What should he do? Year 6 have been thinking about what they'd do. They whispered to Tim in "conscience alley".

The Lift

Jonathan Edwards wasn’t the only special guest at Columbia yesterday. Sonia came to visit us for the first time since she left school after her illness. She was able to come up to the middle floor because of our brand new lift! Jonathan and Sonia declared the new lift open by cutting and pulling a giant ribbon. The lift will finally make our school fully accessible at last!

Jonathan Edwards!

The Olympic and Paralympic flame is still burning at Columbia!
Emerald class were asked to provide a backdrop for some filming by Jonathan Edwards, World Record Holder for Triple Jump. They played basketball with Russell, Philippa and Julie, whilst Jonathan filmed to camera. Jonathan stayed at school and came to a special assembly with all of KS2.

Some children from Pearl Class showed him their triple jump; Jonathan thought he should show us all how to do it correctly. He showed us how to do a ‘hop, step and jump’.

We all stood up and had a go all together!

Jonathan showed us just how long his World Record jump of 18.29 metres actually was; he walked the length of the hall and then had to go out of the door and up the stairs too! Wow! Jonathan told us he didn’t dream of being a triple jumper when he was younger. He told us to do the sports we enjoyed and to always try our best.

Torch Parade

The last day the summer term didn't go out with a whimper; it went out in a blaze of light as both the Year 2 classes paraded into the school assembly with their special Olympic Torches.
The torches were made of cardboard but held a special secret. Inside they had their own electric circuit that the children had made! With the lights dimmed in the hall, the children turned on the paperclip switches and marched through, opening the last assembly of the year.

Healthy Breakfasts

We met some famous athletes in assembly on Tuesday. We met 'Jessica Ennis', 'Tom Daley', 'Steve Redgrave', 'Victoria Pendleton' and 'Andy Murray'. Olive talked to each one to find out what they liked to eat for breakfast. We also had some excellent chefs on hand to make the athletes their healthy Olympic breakfasts. We found out that Steve Redgrave likes to eat 3 Weetabix! Each athlete enjoyed eating their breakfast after assembly was over!

Closing Ceremony

What a fantastic celebration of sport and cultures we had on Monday! But it wasn't over yet. We had a Grand Closing Ceremony. Every member of the school was squashed into the Middle Hall. We marched in to some joyous music. Mary presented every class with a special certificate from LOCOG signed by Lord Coe. We enjoyed watching a special film of the day made by the 'official' photographers. There were images of every class participating in their sports and activities. Finally there was a surprise event. The teachers fired golden confetti all over us! We all felt happy, special and excited. We clapped to 'Shine' as we marched back to class. Our parents could look at the film of the day on the lobby screen to see what we had been up to.

Global Learning

When athletes were not competing in their events, they were learning all about their country. All over the school children were 'going global'. Some classes learned to speak a few phrases in a different language. One class learned to samba and made masks for a Brazilian carnival. One class learned to use chopsticks and wrote in Chinese script. Year 6 had visits from Australian and Jamaican visitors who answered their questions about the countries. Some classes also made their own Olympic medals and wrote their names in Russian. One class made Bulgarian aprons and many classes made their own mini flags to bring to the Closing Ceremony.

Let The Games Begin!

Columbia athletes took over every available space in the school to compete in their sports. Each class participated in a different sport. The athletes demonstrated all the Olympic and Paralympic Values. 'Official' photographers visited the events and took photos of remarkable achievements. Many personal bests were made and some were bettered.

The Columbia Olympic Games

We staged our very own Olympic Games on Monday! All classes participated in a Grand Opening Ceremony. There was a Procession of Flags with each class parading their country's flag and name. There was a special torch relay and lighting of the Olympic cauldron. Two children had written a new athletes' oath specially for the ceremony. They took the oath on behalf of all pupils whilst standing at a golden pedestal.Mary announced that the Games had begun and we all danced out to some fun music.

Faster Higher Stronger

This week in Assembly we thought about why the Olympic Motto might be Faster Higher Stronger. Children had great ideas about striving to be better and always working to improve in everything we do. We can all work towards a Personal Best.

Four children helped Olly in assembly. Mabli was time keeper and measured with the stopwatch and a metre stick.
Shujana ran 100 metres around the hall. She ran really fast.

Curtis jumped up high. He jumped about 60 cms, wow!
Honor picked up a tray full of KG weights. She was so strong!

Then we all had to guess the World Records of Usain Bolt, Stefka Kostadinova and Rahman Siamond.
We were all amazed at how fast Usain Bolt ran, how high Stefka Kostadinova could jump and how strong Rahman Siamond was!

Sylvie's Mascot

Sylvie made a mascot at home using recycled materials and sellotape. Her mascot flew into our Tuesday's Assembly this week to visit and now lives on one of the Olympic Displays in the Middle Hall.

The Torch Relay Song

KS1 classes have learnt the Torch Relay Song in Singing Assembly. They have been having their own mini Torch Relay around the hall. Last week Leon and Fidha, from Coral Class, made a special Olympic Torch during Golden Time. So this week the Torch Relay had its own special torch! Here are KS1 all having fun singing the song.

Olympic and Paralympic Values

Emerald and Pearl classes are thinking about how they can keep the Olympic and Paralympic values in class and in PE lessons too.
The children and adults in each class are going to look out for people keeping the values. Children who keep the values will have their picture pinned up onto an Olympic wreath.

Torch Relay

Today we had our very own torch relay in assembly. We learnt all about lighting the flame in Greece. We found out about the design of the London 2012 torch. Then we had a torch relay around the hall; each class had a torch bearer. The torch bearers ran really fast to reach different parts of the UK!

Mascot Challenge

Olly challenged classes to make a mascot about a month ago.
Sharmin went one stage further. She has made her own mascot at home. Her mascot is very cute with a stripy logo. Sharmin is still thinking of a name.

PE planning with Sapphire Class

This afternoon I popped into Sapphire class and discovered them working with Pru to design and plan their very own PE warm up games for this term’s PE lessons. They were watching clips of different sports from the Get Set website. They were creating warm ups that used features of the different sports in them. Well done Sapphire Class!

Olympic Posters

Ebony and Bronze classes have been busy with an art project with their teachers and with Ann and Carina. They did some life drawing and sketched an athlete. Then they used paper collage to make figures of athletes. They covered the image with transluscent paper and added paint. Finally they screen printed a banner to turn their images into posters. The final posters are all over the school.

So much has been going on...

The school has been really busy with Olympic themed displays and activities.
Mary and Olly have been continuing to focus on The Olympics in their assemblies. In the last 2 weeks we have been focussing on the Olympic and Paralympic values. And children have been demonstrating them to the school.
We have changing Olympic displays in the Middle Hall and in the Lobby. Philippa has just added a countdown to the games.

Olympic Assemblies

The whole school is looking forward to the Olympics and Paralympics. To help us prepare, Mary and Olly have started London 2012 whole school assemblies every Tuesday.
